Here be Dragon Fruit

Mar 20, 2026

Thursday began with a decision. Or rather a question. Followed by a hasty decision. “Would sir like this morning’s special?” The laminated picture sold it to me. A rice bowl breakfast. Lovely. Spicy. Like last night’s leftover takeaway. Equally interesting was a white fleshed fruit with black dots throughout. It transpires that it is called Dragon Fruit. You live and learn. It was very tasty.

Once the eating was done we set off for what would be 20k steps day with bookings made for the Flower Dome and the Rainforest Dome. These were in the Gardens by the Bay. The first was lovely with the highlight being a Japanese themed garden awash with Cherry Blossom and every fecker and his granny wanting a selfie with these as a backdrop. You can I managed to clear an area for our selfie.

The second stop was unbelievable. The Cloud Forest Dome featuring Jurassic Park. Brilliant. Waterfalls, Rainforest. Elevated walkways and dinosaurs roaring and getting on. Most enjoyable. As a 60 year old child this was magic.

The next stop was a walk through the Super Tree Grove but not before a cool refreshment was had. We went into Shake Shack. Well all seemed straight forward. Lift a pager, enter its number, place your order, pay and wait patiently. It was dog eat dog getting a table as the culture here is that you can reserve a table just by dreaming about it the night before it seems. A degree of aggression was required to beat the grannies to a table but I managed. Our pager was 922.

As the minutes ticked by it dawned on me that this number could also be 226 if turned over. An interesting curiosity. But it further dawned on me that it actually was 226. Bollocks. I had to go to the counter and explain and you just knew the big fella at the till was thinking in less than flattering terms about me. But he held it together nicely and sorted the issue out.

So we made to the Big Trees and impressive they were.

We had a bit of time to kill so we headed into Castle Court and Belly Busters for a cold drink and to my shame Char Sui Chicken which was lovely. Then it was off to the Skypark. Floor 56 of the Marina Bay Sands and its viewing platform. I’ll let the view speak for itself. Suffice it to say it took a minute or two to get used to the height.

So we finished the day in Satay Street with a platter of chicken, mutton and octopus skewers. Very tasty. Followed by Thunder rice and chicken. Excellent.

We finished off with the obligatory Sling in the Hummingbird Bar at the back of the hotel. However we were intrigued as to the name of an establishment across the street. Answers on a post card please as to what you think it could be.

Finishing now but one last photo that could not be avoided.
